The Third Sunday of Easter

+ En el nombre del Padre, del hijo, y del Espíritu Santo. Amen.

Hoy, estoy predicando un sermón bilingüe. Me alegraría recibir las reacciones sobre este método de predica, porque cambiaré entre los dos idiomas durante el sermón. 

Today I am preaching a bilingual sermon. I’ll be happy to hear any feedback about how this method goes for you - good or bad - as I will switch between the two languages throughout the sermon.

El evangelio de hoy continúa del domingo de la resurrección,  en seguida Mary magdalene, Joana, y Mary la madre de Santiago y las otras mujeres vieron la tumba vacía y presenciaron el Cristo resucitado. 

Today’s Gospel picks up on the Sunday of the Resurrection, shortly after Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James and other women saw the empty tomb and bore witness to the resurrected Christ.

Jesus se acercó a los dos discípulos cuando caminaban. Pero, no le reconocieron a Jesus hasta se sentaron y Jesus tomó el pan, lo bendijo, y lo partío. Entonces se abrieron sus ojos y reconocieron a quien ha estado con ellos todo el

Jesus draws near to two disciples as they walk. But they do not recognize Jesus until they sit down and Jesus takes bread, blesses it, and breaks it. Then their eyes are opened and they recognize who has been with them the whole time.

Comiendo, le reconocieron a Cristo como la persona con quien han estado en su viaje.

Eating, they recognized Christ as the person they had been with on their journey.

Comiendo, estamos invitados a reconocer a Cristo en los demás. 

Eating, we are invited to recognize Christ in one another.

Comiendo, y comiendo juntos, es el acto central de adoración que practicamos como Cristianos.

Eating, and eating together, is the central act of worship that we do as Christians.

Comer juntos es algo muy maravilloso para los humanos. No es una sorpresa que me encanta comer, y que me encanta comer con gente. Y, pienso que a nosotros como congregación nos encanta comer con gente - nuestras horas de café son muy maravillosas ocasiones de comer y de estar con los demás. 

Eating together is something profoundly wonderful for humans. Now, it may come as no surprise that I love to eat, and I love to eat with people. And I think we as a congregation enjoy eating with people - our coffee hours are really wonderful occasions to eat and be with one another.

Varios estudios realizados en los últimos diez años demuestran que comer con otras personas, en vez de solos, es mejor por la salud mental, reduce niveles de estrés, y aumenta el sentimiento de bienestar. Hay factores psicológicos y biológicos cuales influencian comer en

A number of studies over the last 10 years have found that eating with others, rather than alone, is indicative of better mental health, reduced levels of stress, and increased feelings of well being. There are truly psychological and biological factors which go into communal eating.

Y también, hay realidades espirituales profundas que ocurren cuando comemos juntos. Somos seres encarnados. Dios no nos hizo para ser espíritus que habitan cuerpos. En vez de, somos espíritus y cuerpos - bellamente entrelazados y enredados.

And, there are deep spiritual realities which occur when we eat together too. We are, after all, embodied beings. God did not make us spirits to inhabit a physical body, rather we are spirits and bodies - beautifully intertwined and enmeshed.

Y el acto central de adoración que practicamos como Cristianos cada semana en los domingos, que son técnicamente fiestas del señor, y durante los días de fiesta cuando honramos los Santos, es… comer un plato juntos.

And the central act of worship we do as Christians every week on Sundays, which are technically Feasts of the Lord, and on Feast Days when we honor the blessed Saints, is… to have a meal together.

Específicamente, en la Santa Comunión, tomamos pan, bendecimos el pan, le ofrecemos a Dios un sacrificio de alabanza y acción de gracias, partimos el pan, y comemos pan y bebemos vino. Pan y vino que, por el poder de Dios, se llenan con la presencia verdadera de Jesucristo.

Specifically, in Holy Communion, we take bread, bless bread, offer to God a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, break bread, and eat bread and drink wine. Bread and wine which, by the power of God, become filled with the very presence of Jesus Christ. 

Pan y vino se convierten en el cuerpo y sangre de nuestro salvador para nosotros. Y cuando comulgamos juntos somos enredados físicamente y espiritualmente en la Santa Comunión de la iglesia aquí en la tierra y en el cielo en la presencia de Dios.

Bread and wine becomes for us the Body and Blood of our savior. In communing together we are physically and spiritually bound up in the Holy Communion of the Church both here on Earth and in Heaven in the presence of God.

Este domingo, estamos invitados a presenciar a Cristo cuando comamos juntos durante la hora de cafe.

This week, we are invited to bear witness to Christ while we eat with one another at Coffee Hour.

Estamos invitados a presenciar a Cristo cuando comemos con amigos y familia durante la semana.

We are invited to bear witness to Christ while we eat with friends and family throughout the week.

Y muy especialmente, estamos invitados a presenciar a Cristo cuando nos acercamos al altar y comemos del cuerpo y sangre de nuestro Señor, lo que, en el partir y compartir del pan, nos revela a nosotros, y nos hace un cuerpo en Cristo, unido a Dios Todopoderoso.

And most especially, we are invited to bear witness to Christ when we draw near to the altar and partake of the body and blood of our Lord, who, in the breaking and sharing of the bread, reveals Himself to us, and makes us all One Body in Christ, united to Almighty God.

El acto central de adoración cristiano es comer un plato celestial dado a nosotros por Jesucristo. Entonces, demos gracias y alabanza de que podemos hacerlo, semana tras semana, juntos, para conocer nuestro dios más y más completo cada vez. 

The central act of Christian worship is to eat a heavenly meal given to us by Christ. Let us then offer our thanks and praise that we get to do this, week after week, together, coming to know our God more and more fully each time.
